Climate Resilient Communities
Community Development Agency
What Can You Do?
Start a Resilient Neighborhoods Team with your community or business
Our small daily decisions have impacts on our community.
Resilient Neighborhoods
gives you the information you need to make positive choices. Understand the local and regional risks of sea level rise and climate change. Visit the
Adapting to Rising Tides Bay Shoreline Flood Explorer
. The Explorer contains locally-relevant online maps and tools to help understand, visualize, and anticipate vulnerabilities to sea level rise and storms.
Ensure that homes have adequate defensible space to reduce wildfire risk
Defensible space is the buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland areas that surround it. Make sure to remove combustible outdoor furniture, clean fallen leaves, and remove tree limbs from near your home. You can learn more about how to create a safer home at
FireSafeMarin
.
Learn about heat vulnerability and how we can mitigate the public health impacts of extreme heat in the future
Visit the
California Heat Assessment Tool
. The Tool shows heat health events, duration, average temperatures and more at the County and census tract levels.
Sign up for a Marin-Friendly Garden Walk
Using water wisely in your garden conserves more for the environment and reduces the energy used to move it to your home.
Marin-Friendly Garden Walks
is a partnership between Marin Master Gardeners and Marin Municipal Water District to provide homeowners in the MMWD service area with information and advice on improving their irrigation practices to help conserve Marin’s precious water resources. To make an appointment for a Garden Walk, call the Master Gardener Help Desk 415-473-4204, or fill out an
online request for a Garden Walk
.
Volunteer at a local nonprofit, school, or religious organization
Social resilience is community resilience. Building relationships in and outside of your community helps foster a collective vision for sustainable communities that can better embrace and adapt to change. Share your priorities, learn from others’ life experiences, and embrace diversity.
Use water more efficiently
Schedule a no-cost water use consultation with
Marin Municipal Water District
or
North Marin Water District
, or a no-cost energy and water assessment with
Rising Sun Center for Opportunity
(the program occurs during the summer each year).
Work with your community on emergency preparedness
Ready Marin
has great information on emergency preparedness and on how to sign up for
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
trainings in your community.
Make informed purchasing decisions
Vote with your dollar and support businesses that prioritize the planet and people. The
California Green Business Network
certifies and recognizes local businesses that take steps to reduce their environmental footprint. Search their online directory to find and support a business near you. Our regional partner StopWaste provides a
Green Purchasing Guide
for individuals and businesses.
What is the County Doing?
Assessing Sea Level Rise + Adapting
The County has completed sea level rise assessments for the Bay and Coastal sides of the County and better understands the expected flooding impacts now and in the future. The
BayWAVE
and
C-SMART
projects identify opportunities to adapt to sea level rise and localized flooding informed by technical experts and community members. Visit the
Marin Sea Level Rise website
to learn more!
Game of Floods
Game of Floods is fun! Players review different sea level rise scenarios and choose the assets they want to protect, decide which strategies they are willing to implement, and assess the environmental and financial impacts of those strategies. Several community groups and 160 students at various schools have played the game. Visit
Game of Floods
to learn how you can play!
