Plein-Air paint out at the Farmers Market Event, lighting of the spire and special County Fair exhibit
San Rafael, CA - To continue the year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Frank Lloyd Wright Marin Civic Center, several special events are coming up in June and July, presented by the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center Conservancy.
Join us for a Plein-Air Paint Out at the Frank Lloyd Wright Marin Civic Center Farmers Market on Sunday, June 9. In partnership with Marin Open Studios, we invite all artists and artists at heart to bring an easel and set of paints (oil or water, whichever you prefer) and pick your favorite spot to paint the Civic Center and surrounding grounds. Celebrate the imagination of Frank Lloyd Wright (born June 8, 1867) and enjoy the beauty of our Marin Civic Center grounds. Members of the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy will be on hand at the Farmers Market information booth to share interesting facts and information about the history of the Marin Civic Center. There will be special limited edition 50th Anniversary Posters and Postcards available at the booth.
Spire Lighting: The Civic Center's iconic 200-foot golden spire will be illuminated from dusk to midnight on Saturday, June 8 to celebrate the birth of Frank Lloyd Wright in 1867.
According to Mr. Wright: "We will never have a culture of our own until we have an architecture of our own ... We will have it only when we know what constitutes a good building and when we know that the good building is not one that hurts the landscape, but is one that makes the landscape more beautiful than it was before that building was built. In Marin County you have one of the most beautiful landscapes I have seen, and I am proud to make the buildings of this County characteristic of the beauty of the County.”
At the Fair: Come to the Wright Place in the “Schools Rule Learning Pavilion” 2013 Marin County Fair, July 3-7, 2013: The Wright Place sponsored by the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center Conservancy and the Marin County Free Library's Anne T. Kent California Room showcases the imagination, creativity and pioneering spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright and his last commission, the Marin County Civic Center, a national historic landmark.
The centerpiece of "The Wright Place" is the original scale model of the Civic Center built by Mr. Wright's Taliesin Architects in 1960. Historians, architects and special guests will be on hand to share interesting stories about how the Marin Civic Center was built and the visionary County employees who selected Frank Lloyd Wright to design Marin’s new Civic Center and fairgrounds complex.
While at the fair, visit the competitive exhibit of youth photography “Photographs of the Marin County Civic Center.” The competition is in partnership with the Marin County Fair and Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center Conservancy, and celebrates the architectural and cultural legacy of the Civic Center during its 50th anniversary.
