For Immediate ReleaseJune 26, 2013
Residents from Fairfax, San Anselmo, Ross, Sleepy Hollow, Kentfield, Larkspur and Greenbrae are encouraged to attend a community meeting of the Ross Valley Flood Protection and Watershed Program on July 13 at Sir Francis Drake High School.
Marin County District 2 Supervisor Katie Rice and staff members from Marin County Flood Control will present an update on the Ross Valley Flood Protection and Watershed Program – a watershed wide, collaborative effort to address chronic flooding in the Ross Valley. Staff members will also provide details on the proposed detention basin system -- how they work, what they look like, their dual use function and the critical role they play in helping achieve flood protection. Come learn about this important community program.
In December 2005, Ross Valley creeks spilled out of their banks in the early morning hours and caused $90 million in property damages to residents, businesses and the public sector. After intense study, a 10-year work plan was adopted in 2012 to address chronic flooding with a series of many small and a few large infrastructure projects to create a 25-year-flood level of protection. This is the first phase of a 20-year capital improvement program designed to achieve a 100-year-flood level of protection.
The community meeting starts at 10 a.m. at Drake High’s Student Union and is expected to last about two hours. There will be time for a Q&A session and an opportunity to talk one-on-one with staff about the program and projects specific to your city or town. The school is at 1327 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in San Anselmo.
