Civic Center Library to Close for Upgrades

Remodeling starts April 16; reopening tentatively set for May 1

San Rafael, CA – The Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library in San Rafael will close from April 16-30 so a construction crew can make renovations to feature a more open, inviting and convenient lobby.

After the $300,000 makeover, visitors will discover a handy new information desk, technology upgrades, swift check-out stations, new computer tables, new lounge seating, improved accessibility and easier access to high-demand materials.

The design elements will respect the architectural heritage of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Marin County Civic Center, a registered National Historic Landmark.

The project, formally approved March 11 by the Marin County Board of Supervisors, is funded from Measure A, a $49-per-parcel measure that was approved by 74 percent of voters in 2010. Funds from the five-year tax allow branches to make structural improvements, extend library hours, hire new staff and provide programming for children, teens and seniors. Extensive upgrades have been made at the Novato, Marin City, Point Reyes and Inverness branches with Measure A funds.

The library book drop will be open at the Civic Center for returned materials during the branch closure. Books and other items placed on hold for the Civic Center Library can be picked up in Room 414 of the Civic Center Building from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Book donations cannot be accepted at the branch during the closure, but donations can be dropped off at the Friends of the Marin County Library Book Place at 1608 Grant Ave. in Novato.

Access to eBooks and other electronic resources are always available 24/7. All other branches of the Marin County Free Library will remain open. For more information, call 473-6057 or visit
