Board to Consider Santa Venetia Community Plan

February 14 hearing is culmination of many years of research, feedback

San Rafael, CA – After numerous public meetings and hearings over the past four years, County of Marin planners will present a draft community plan for the unincorporated Santa Venetia neighborhood to the Marin County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, February 14.

A hilltop view of Santa Venetia, looking down on homes and Las Gallinas CreekSanta Venetia is on the northeast side of unincorporated San Rafael, just east of the Marin County Civic Center.
The hearing is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. and will take place in the Board of Supervisors Chamber, Suite 330 of the Marin County Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive in San Rafael.

Santa Venetia is a community of more than 1,600 homes bordering Las Gallinas Creek, east of Highway 101 and generally north and east of the San Rafael city limits.

The draft plan, recommended for approval by the Planning Commission in October 2016, provides information on Santa Venetia and identifies policies and guidance for important community issues such as protection of open space and sensitive habitat, safety from flooding, and preservation of community character.

Preparation of the plan began in 2013 with collaboration between a community advisory committee, County planning staff and residents. In addition to monthly advisory committee meetings, residents provided comments, concerns, and suggestions at several public workshops. The draft plan is organized into chapters addressing Natural Resources, Environmental Hazards, Land Use & Community Character, Parks & Open Space, and Transportation. It also includes information on Santa Venetia’s unique and interesting history.

In the fall of 2014, the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors held hearings on an earlier draft of the plan and requested additional information on a number of issues. Since then, the plan has been amended to include supplemental information on key properties, new land use and natural resource policies, updated sea level rise maps, and additional park and open space recommendations.
